Assimilation Ministries

The Assimilation Ministries Committee works with the Adult and Spiritual Formation Councils to formulate an intentional process to engage the membership in discipleship, spiritual growth, and service. They work to foster an environment of love and acceptance as well as a guest friendly physical plant at KUMC. They help to assimilate and connect church-goers into the fellowship of the church. Members of the committee should have one or more of the gifts of hospitality, leadership, intercession, helps, administration, discernment, wisdom, encouragement, faith, or giving.

ASSIMILATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
August 4, 2010

Those attending were: Jerry Smith, Peggy Fox, Terri Anderson, Rudy Hamrick, Eric Peate

Terri opened with a devotional entitled “The Right Gift” from the Upper Room referencing I Corinthians 12:4-7.

The minutes from the last meeting were reviewed and approved.

Campus Signs: They have been ordered!!!!

Activities Brochure: Due to the fact that the weekly church bulletin does not cover all the church activities, Terri and Eric met with Pastor Bob and have created an activities brochure. The committee discussed how much information should be included; a one sentence description of each activity or complete information including contact person and phone numbers. The general consensus seems to be to only put a brief description of each. The idea is to keep it as generic as possible so that they don’t have to be changed and reprinted too often. Eric will work on the brochure which is targeted to be ready for distribution the end of August.

2nd Impressions: Our yearly campus tour was last August. Therefore, committee decided to take another campus tour at our next meeting on September 1. We will invite a representative from the Trustees to join us. Jerry presented a proposal to have small groups “adopt” a church flower bed – to keep them weeded and looking better for visitors and newcomers. The question was also raised if the professional lawn care folks are supposed to be weeding.

Disconnected Members:  Susan Moreton and Pat Douglass have been meeting to develop a plan to jump-start this important initiative as it is appropriate to fall under the auspices of Member Care. They plan to circulate a list of names on the call list to staff prior to making the calls so if anyone knows anything about any of those families the callers can be armed with that knowledge prior to making the calls.

Lights: The committee members discussed their opinion of the revolving lights used in the 9:30 worship service. An informal survey of those attending worship during this service were either ambivalent about the lights, or disliked them. No one said they loved the lights. Concerns included the triggering of migraine headaches and epileptic seizures from the flashing lights. While the committee acknowledged the desire for more creative worship, they felt a “happy medium” could be reached by using the lights for only the first song(s) and then have them stationary instead of revolving, and being certain they did not flash into the congregation.

On the Web: All agree the church website is looking very good. A recent policy change is that if a calendar date has “TBA” for time or location, it must be changed to actual information by two weeks out from the event date or it will be completely removed from the web calendar. It is better to not have it listed than to have “TBA” that close to an event. Another area lacking is still the various committee meeting minutes. Most are way out of date.

NEW BUSINESS

Pat Douglass is looking for an appropriate location to have a mugging station for the Spirit & Truth service.

Jerry is considering a “Fall Prevention” event in September or October.

The KUMC Women are having an Ice Cream Social and Fall Ministry Showcase on August 31.  The main goal is to get more women plugged into small groups or activities (i.e. Assimilated).

The men of the committee were asked what type of events they would like to see for men and they agreed a father/son event or something similar to the Joe Calhoun economy event.

Closing Prayer

The next meeting will be September 1, 2010 and it will be a walking tour of the campus.
